Alright, I'll give it a go.
a) Detroit Rock City ~ Kiss
b) Message In A Bottle ~ Police
c) Higher Love ~ Depeche Mode
d) Revolution Calling ~ Queensryche
e) Twist & Shout ~ Beatles
Note: not in a 1-6 format, cause each of 'em have equal weight, and are on the list for different reasons.
Comments:
a) Detroit Rock City, to me, is just a hella good rock song. Period. Kiss in their prime. Probably wore the vinyl out on that album, the almighty 'Destroyer', along with the tennis racket that stood in for Ace Frehley's Les Paul in my mind. Ah, the basement jam sessions! :)
b) Message in a Bottle is my favorite Police song. It came out when I really identified with isolation and loneliness, but the happy ending -
Walked out this morning, don’t believe what I saw
Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I’m not alone at being alone
Hundred billion castaways, looking for a home
- helped give me a lil hope that it might turn out okay in the end.
Which it did.
c) Higher Love... well, it means a lot to me and Sheila. Check the lyrics, it'll make sense. :)
d) Revolution Calling is my personal protest song. It's just as relevant to the political and social scene here in America as it was when released. I think the only way we're gonna pull out of the tailspin we're in is to put boot to skull - and hope the new boss is better than the last.
e) You might think that 'Twist and Shout' is an odd choice, considering how many other hits the Beatles turned out. It's a cover, for gawdsake. But to me, it evokes memories of being in the 2nd grade and finding my mom's stash of British Invasion albums in the basement. My introduction to Rock was in that box... Beatles, Stones, the Who. Sgt. Peppers was in there, along with the Stones' answer (Their Satanic Majesty's Request). Pretty soon, my little record player with it's pitiful speaker was blasting out some of the best Brit rock ever recorded. 'Twist and Shout' was a big favorite for me and my friends. The lyrics were easy to remember, and there was lots of yelling and screaming. Seriously, the Fab Four really go apeshit on this tune. Years later, it shows up in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (one of my top 10 movies of all time). Remember the parade? Watching Ferris channel Wayne Newton and John Lennon... well, it's a wonder.
So, yeah, loads of happy memories about that song. :)
